Sport at Sacred Heart Kooringal

Sport at Sacred Heart Kooringal is designed so that students may experience a range of sporting experiences and skills. Basic principles which are focused on are;
  • Have fun with your friends
  • Skill development
  • Show appreciation and respect for coaches, opponents, officials and administrators
  • Respect the rights, dignity and worth of all participants regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion.
  • Remember that children participate in sport for their enjoyment, and that winning is only part of the fun
  • Respect the decisions of officials

Sport takes many forms, including PE lessons in class, school carnivals, representative sports and participating in competitions.

Students are divided into 4 Houses for competition which are named after former Bishops of Wagga Wagga, these being; Henschke, Dwyer, Carroll and Brennan.

PE Lessons

Picture
PE lessons are conducted weekly and expose students to a variety of sports skills and experiences.  Often development officers will be used for specialist coaching. In infants particular focus is on having fun, joining in and gross motor skills.  In Primary particular focus will be on participation and skill development in sports such as; AFL, Rugby League, Rugby Union, Basketball, Netball, Touch, League Tag, and Athletics among other sports. A Swimming and Gymnastics program is run for the whole school on alternate years.

Representative Sport

Picture
Students are able to represent Sacred Heart in Athletics if they finish top 2 in a field event and the 800m, or top 3 in the 100m and 200m.  In Swimming if students finish top 3 in all events except for the individual medley, where it is top 2.  The top 4 in each age for cross country will go to Diocesan.  Students may represent in the following order; school - Deanery - Diocesan - McKillop - NSW PSSA - School Sport Australia.
Students in Stage 3 are able to trial for Diocesan sports, where they will trial at school, then trial for the Diocesan Team, and from there follow the same path as mentioned above.  Students must be playing these sports outside of school to be eligible to try out and must demonstrate above average skill to be considered.

School Carnivals

Picture
School carnivals are held for Years 2 - 6 for Swimming, Athletics and Cross Country (Infants join us for Athletics). These carnivals are a great way to show team spirit for their House.  We use these carnivals to select a school representative team for Deanery and Diocesan carnivals. In Swimming and Athletics there are champions for boys and girls in Juniors (8/9/10 Years), 11Years and Seniors (12/13 Years) and in Cross Country the champions are awarded to 8/9's,10's, 11's and 12/13 years).  Parents' assistance is greatly appreciated.

Competitions

Picture
Students are able to play in organised competitions where they will compete against schools in Wagga and beyond.  Sports include Kelly Cup (boys and girls AFL, Stage 3), Mortimer Shield (Boys Rugby League, Girls League Tag, Stage 3), Trent Barrett Shield (Boys Rugby League, Girls League Tag, Stage 2), Jackie Murphy Shield (Girls Netball, Stage 2 & 3).
Generally sporting Gala days (cricket, touch, etc) will not be attended due to the high volume of opportunities on offer versus the amount of time they take away from class teaching time  These are considered 'one off' events and don't contribute to skill development as such.  A decision on attendance will be made on a case-by-case basis.
